History

Ordered on 05.11.1912 and keel laid 28.02.1913. Launched as "FALSTRIA" on 12.03.1914, trials: 18.03.1915 and delivered to Akties Det Østasiatiske Kompanie, København, on 31.05.1915. The ship was built by Harland & Wolff Ltd. (Irvine yard of Mackie & Thomson Ltd., Govan, Glasgow) as new building #451(I). I = Irvine yard of Mackie & Thomson Ltd., Govan, Glasgow. The main engines were built by Barclay, Curle & Co., Glasgow. The particulars were 2x6 cyl., 4-stroke Single Acting (SA). Type designation: 6150X. X=crosshead engines. Diameter x stroke was: (22'' x 29''15/16) about (558x760)mm. Total 2250 IHP (1650 BHP). 10 knots.. We do not have much information about B&W engines built abroad, but the engines were similar to the engines fitted in SELANDIA (1912) but with different diameters and stroke due to the inch measurement. The Barclay had major difficulties in building those engines due to the fact that all drawings were measured in mm. Engineers from B&W, Copenhagen had to attend Barclay in order to help. She had accommodation for 16 passengers. From November 1932, 22 passengers. Crew total 35 (13 on deck, 13 engine crew and 9 catering). Code letters: NTDL later OZWB. Cargo gear: 10 Derricks. A sister ship LALANDIA (#452 (I)) was taken over by the British authorities and never delivered to EAC. 06.04.1915: She left the yard for New York and passed the Panama Canal for Honolulu, Dalny and Nikolajewsk. On the return voyage to Copenhagen she called at San Francisco and intended to pass the Panama Canal. She laid in Balboa from 2 to 8 November. Being unable to pass the canal due to the subsidence of the canal she had to proceed through the Magellan strait to Hull and Copenhagen. The next three voyages was to the Far East (Bangkok), but on the return leg on the third voyage she had to call at Cape Town, Freetown, Bergen, Lerwick, London, Sunderland, Lerwick, Bergen and Copenhagen, where she arrived 9. December 1917. On 31 December 1917 she left Copenhagen and was trading outside the war zone in Europe. On the 17 June 1919 she called again at Copenhagen. On 27 September 1919 she left Copenhagen for Bangkok, and apart from one single voyage to the west coast of South America, she was trading on the Bangkok service onwards to 1932. 1932 she left Copenhagen for a single voyage to the West Coast of USA and Canada and was then transferred to Transpacific service until the end of 1934. The management of the ship was then taken over by the office in Bangkok and she was engaged in domestic service. 26.09.1934 the Danish crew signed off and a Chinese crew signed on. On 3 July 1936 she left Bangkok on her last voyage for EAC to Copenhagen, where handed over to the new owners. On 18.09.1936 the sale of the ship was reported to Danish Register. She was deleted the same day. Sold to A/S Olymp (Management: Einar Lange, Oslo), Panama and renamed "OLYMP". Call sign HPGI. 1938 resold to Yngvar Hvistendahl, Tønsberg. Panama-flag, renamed: "MATROS". 1940 sold again to Norseland S.S. Co. Inc. (Management: Odd Godager, Oslo), Panama and renamed "NORSELAND". Purchased on 11.12.1941 by Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft. Appointed owners: Kriegs-Transport-Amt, Bern (Swiss War Transport Office)(Management: Honegger & Ascott, London), Basel. Renamed at New York into "SAENTIS". Call sign HBDK. Her first voyage for her new owners commenced at the first days of April. She was delayed due necessary repairs, especially at her engines. In 1943/44 re-engined by Companhia Uniao Fabril, Lisboa, with new Sulzer-Diesels. 2x 6 cylinder 6TS48 with an output of 2400 horsepower and three auxiliary engines of the type 3DDH22 each 220 horsepower and the emergency diesel, type 2ZG9. Fitted with an additional heavy derrick for hatch no. 2. The whole modification took about 8 months, extremely delayed by labour dispute at Portugal. For her first voyage with the new engines she sailed on the 10.02.1944 from Lisboa bound to the Rio de la Plata with a bunkering stop at Trinidad. 12.02.1947 sold for about Sfr. 1'500'000 to Nautilus A.G. (Glarus), Lugano. Still registered at Basel. Not renamed. 1953 Keller Shipping Ltd., Basel, took over the management of the financially troubled Nautilus A.G., Glarus. 1954 purchased by Keller Shipping Ltd., Basel, this company took over also the Nautilus-Line, which traded from the Mediterranean Sea to West Africa. Sold on 30th September 1963 to Italian ship breakers. The "SAENTIS" arrived at the 20.12.1963 at Vado di Ligure, and demolition began 23.12.1963. |
