This Multipurpose General Cargo Vessel IMO No.: 9539377 was ordered on 18.09.2008 by Safmarine Container Lines NV, Antwerp from the builders Wuhu Xinlian Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., Wuhu, Anhui Province, China (Yard No.: W0823). The keel of was laid down on 31.05.2010 and was launched under her originally intended name SAFMARINE SUDD on 20.11.2010. First intended to be registered in Singapore with call sign: VRIP3. During her sea trials in January 2012 she bore shortly the temporary name XIN LIAN 1103 and reportedly was registered in Hong Kong.
Safmarine Container Line NV, Antwerp did not accept the vessel and subsequently she was laid-up in the builder's yard, along the banks of the Yangtze River (about 350 km upriver). At a later stage the ship was taken-over by SCL (Swiss Cargo Line) Reederei Ltd., Bern. On 05.08.2013 she was registered in the Swiss shipping registry with home port Basel. (official No.: 211, call sign: HBLG, registered owner: SCL Basilisk AG, Bern, Switzerland). The technical and commercial management is provided by Enzian Ship Management AG, Zürich, Switzerland.
This multi-purpose cargo vessel has a summer deadweight of 17'953 mt on a draught of 8,60 m and can carry 1034 TEU containers. She has 3 cargo holds. The three, electro-hydraulic cranes, made by McGregor have each a lifting capacity of 80 mt. Two cranes can work in tandem and lift a cargo of 150 mt. Propulsion is by one slow speed, 6-cylinder diesel engine MAN B&W, type: 6S50 MC-C MK8, built under licence by Doosan of South Corea (9'960 kW at 127 RPM).
The complement of the ship is 18 persons, the captain and the senior officers are from Eastern Europe, the junior officers and the ratings are from Sri Lanka.
Her maiden voyage went from China, via the Panama Canal into the Carribean Sea.
Since November 9th, 2017 the owner is called MV Basilisk AG.
22nd November 2017 at 15:30 local time (13:30 UTC) in Durban transferred to Massoel Shipping SA Geneva. Owner and flag remain the same. The ship's name is now THORCO BASILISK.
